The Musician's Tomb musical composition

I am very honored to be co-composing a piece of music to be played at the dedication of the Musician's Tomb here in New Orleans. If that weren't enough, I am working with Mr Craig Klein, trombonist with Bonerama and New Orleans' busiest musician, and the Creole Beethoven himself, Mr. Wardell Quezergue, master arranger and composer. If you don't know who Mr Wardell is, google him; he arranged "Groove Me" "Mr Big Stuff", "Iko Iko", "Chapel of Love", Dave Bartholemew's big band charts, Professor Longhair's many hits, and a nearly endless list of songs and records. He is truly an icon of American music, and I am thrilled just to know him, much less work with him on a song.

The date of the dedication is about to be announced, and the piece will be played by an all-star brass band at the ceremony. More about that as I get the details.

October News

Hello Friends!! Been too long I know...

The summer is winding down here in New Orleans, which means it's only about 90 degrees. October is the nicest month of the year, and I'm busy with all kinds of projects:

About to make a quick trip (Sept 27-Oct3) to Germany and Denmark with Walter Washington, see the calendar for details. The German tour in April was a resounding success, can't wait to go back!

I get to stay home for most of October, except that I'll be returning to The King Biscuit Blues Festival in Helena, Arkansas, on October 9th, with Walter. We did this one right after Katrina, looking forward to returning.

Then comes Voodoo Fest here in City Park, Oct 29-31...always a great time, under the live oaks, some great music. Check it out at www.thevoodooexperience.com. I'll be doing it with Honey Island, Friday; 101 Runners, Saturday; and Walter Washington, Sunday.

More details soon, and I promise to do a better job of keeping up!!

New CD's Coming Out

This time of year there are lots of new releases coming out of New Orleans, and I'm involved in 2 of the coolest: Honey Island Swamp Band's Good to You, coming out April 10th, and 101 Runners New Orleans Funk 101, April 9th.

Honey Island Swamp Band is one of THE hottest new bands in New Orleans, having just won Best Blues Album for their 2009 relase Wishing Well, and Best New Artist in the annual Offbeat Awards sponsored by Offbeat Magazine. This year they're at it again with Good to You, on Threadhead Records. I wrote and played the horn arrangements on all tracks, and the disc truly kicks ass, with fine songwriting and outstanding musicianship throughout.

101 Runners is fast becoming the cities premiere Mardi Gras Indian funk band. The music on New Orleans Funk 101 was recorded live at Tipitina's in December...I play bari sax throughout. I've just heard the final mixes, and I'm blown away. It captures the intensity and spontaneity of the Indian grooves, features the one and only Big Chief Monk Boudreaux at his absolute best, zigging and zagging with War Chief Juan and the super bad band. Indian funk is only in New Orleans, and this recording really catches the fiya!!

Great East Coast Trip!

I'm just home from an absolutely killer tour of the East Coast with Eric Lindell. My apologies to everyone in Charlotte, where the weather caused us to cancel my triumphant return to the historic Double Door...but after a rough start the rest of the tour went smoothly, and we kicked serious ass from Hot Springs, VA to NYC. Much thanks fot all who came out, it was great to see all of you!! There are some great recordings from various shows, email me and I'll try to hook you up. The 4 piece stripped down unit: Eric of course, Eddie Christmas on drums and Chris Arenas on bass, dynamic, funky, sparse and wide open, we had the room to run and we did. It was a true pleasure playing and hanging with these guys, can't wait to do it again!!

Happy New Year!!

Some exciting things happening for me in 2010. Toiling in Obscurity is being played by nearly 150 stations nationwide, 50 or so in heavy or medium rotation, and it has made several "Best of the Year" lists:

I'm honored to have been chosen as one of Tom Morgan's Top 11 New Orleans CD's for 2009. Tom is a DJ and music historian at world-renowned WWOZ, New Orlean's amazing independent radio station. You can check out his list at www.wwoz.org. AND go to www.tlmorgan.com to check out Tom's brand new book, Historic Photos of New Orleans Jazz. It is an absolutely beautiful book, by one of the leading authorities on New Orleans music.

Mr Grant Britt, music writer at Creative Loafing Magazine, in my old stomping ground Charlotte, NC, also puts it in his top 10 for the year. Read more at http://charlotte.creativeloafing.com/gyrobase/the_year_in_review_music/Content?oid=805537. Grant wrote a great review of the cd when it was released, which is in my press section.

And finally, I have it on good authority that Toiling in Obscurity will be in 2009's top 20 by David Eisenman, jazz director at WTJU radio, at The University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA (I'll post a link asap). It has been in heavy rotation there almost from the beginning, and I must thank David for his ongoing support.

Much thanks to all these writers, and a Safe and Happy 2010 to all of you!!
